In My Shinjuku Gardens

I am here
In my Shinjuku Gardens

My life is in this country
Family is in another

My loves?
In middle age I look,

wind-scattered garden leaves
soaring, landing, and taking off again
refusing to be raked into a neat pile,

admiring the diversity of scattered loves
some are gold, some are red, others brown
a few withered and mouldering

Hearts intertwined
cultures blended, held apart, concealed
muted thoughts – voiced in random tongues

Mutual attraction
divergent paths
another discovery, another life, another love

Here is my collection
those I loved
the one I love now

My rake in hand
my shadow amongst my leaves
as it races away from the setting sun.
